How to Join
The Richard Henry Lee Chapter welcomes any man who is a citizen of good repute and can prove lineal descent from a patriot who supported the American cause during the Revolutionary War (1775–1783). This includes soldiers, sailors, signers of the Declaration of Independence, members of the Continental Congress, and those who provided patriotic service or material support. Membership is open regardless of race, religion, or national origin. Juniors (under 18) and regular members (18 and older) are both welcome.
We are happy to help you every step of the way — many of our members had little or no previous genealogy experience before joining. Whether you have a complete lineage or are just getting started, we encourage you to reach out. Becoming a member of the Sons of the American Revolution connects you with a proud heritage while allowing you to participate in meaningful community service, patriotic events, and historical preservation in the Auburn and East Central Alabama area.
- Joining is a four-step process -
Determine Your Eligibility
Research your family tree to identify a Revolutionary War patriot ancestor. Many members start with known family stories, old Bibles, or relatives who have already joined SAR or DAR.
Gather Your Documentation
You will need birth, marriage, and death records (or other acceptable proofs) linking you generation-by-generation back to your patriot ancestor. The chapter can help you locate records and verify sources.
Contact Our Chapter
Reach out to a chapter officer. We will assign a sponsor or registrar to guide you through the application process at no initial cost for assistance.
Submit Your Application
Complete the official SAR application form with supporting documents. Once approved at the chapter, state, and national levels, you will be inducted as a new Compatriot.
