Samuel Pool was born on June 19, 1759, in North Carolina. Samuel died on September 28,
1844, in Russell County, Alabama. (Alabama Patriots Searchable Database, 2026) 33 He was a
private in the North Carolina militia. According to pension summaries Pool served under Colonel Benjamin
Seawell and Major Brian Russell, placing him within the organized Patriot militia
forces operating in North Carolina during the later years of the war. (S*W5552) 34 Like many
militia soldiers, his service consisted of multiple short tours rather than a single continuous
enlistment, responding to local calls for defense and participation in regional campaigns. Pool’s
duties would have included marching through the North Carolina backcountry, guarding strategic
areas, and engaging in operations against British and Loyalist forces as they moved through the
region. While his pension does not clearly identify a specific named battle, his service under
Seawell and Russell situates him within the broader militia resistance that supported Continental
efforts in the southern theater. These militia units played a crucial role in maintaining pressure on
British forces, disrupting Loyalist activity, and reinforcing larger campaigns that contributed to
American success. After the war, Pool returned to civilian life in North Carolina before joining
the postwar migration southward. By the time he applied for his pension, he was living in Upson
County, Georgia, and his file indicates that he later moved to Russell County, Alabama, where he
spent his final years. He died at the age of 85, leaving behind a documented legacy as a North
Carolina militia soldier whose service, though typical of irregular warfare, contributed to the
broader Patriot victory and whose life reflects the migration patterns of early American settlers.
He lived with his son, Matthew Pool in 1840. (Owen, 1911) 35 Some records indicate he may be
buried near Seale, Alabama. The location of his gravesite is unknown.
