Adam J. Files was born in March of 1762. He died on August 11, 1840. (Alabama Patriots
Searchable Database, 2026) 24 Adam was a South Carolina militia soldier whose service in the
American Revolutionary War is well documented. (S13026) 25 He entered service as a teenager
during the southern campaigns and served multiple short tours in the militia. He identified
several officers under whom he served, including Colonel Wade Hampton, Colonel Richard
Richardson, and Captain John Chestnut. His service under these commanders places him within
the organized Patriot militia efforts resisting British control following the fall of Charleston in
1780. His duties would have included marching across the backcountry, guarding strategic areas,
pursuing Loyalist forces, and supporting larger Patriot operations during a critical phase of the
war. Although his pension does not clearly tie him to a single major battle, his service coincided
with the intense fighting in the region surrounding engagements such as the Battle of Camden
and related campaigns that helped turn the tide in the South. After the war, Adam returned to
civilian life and later moved to Alabama. (Owen, 1911) 26 The location of his gravesite is
unknown.
