William Grimes was born on September 24, 1758, in North Carolina. (Alabama Patriots
Searchable Database, 2026) 13 He served as a private in South Carolina State Troops during the
American Revolutionary War. According to his pension he served under Captain Martin and
Colonel Polk, placing him within organized Patriot forces in the southern theater. His role would
have included marching, guard duty, and participation in field operations during the intense
fighting across the Carolinas. He later applied for his pension in Chambers County, Alabama, in
1854. The location of his gravesite is unknown.
