Reuben Stevens (Stephens) was born on January 16, 1762, in North Carolina. He died in 1860
in Chambers County, Alabama. (Alabama Patriots Searchable Database, 2026) 21 During the
American Revolutionary War, he served as a private in the 6th South Carolina Regiment of State
Troops under Colonel Lytle. He also performed service in the North Carolina militia, reflecting
the common pattern of southern soldiers moving between organized state units and local militia
forces. His duties would have included marching, guard service, and participation in field
operations during the southern campaigns. After the war, Stephens lived for a time in Georgia,
where he applied for his pension, before eventually settling in Chambers County, Alabama.
(Owen, 1911) 22 He later applied for bounty land there on April 7, 1855, further confirming his
recognized service. Reuben Stephens is buried in the New Hope Cemetery which is in the
community of Abanda, Alabama on Chambers 237. (Reuben Stevens, 2026) 23 A recognition
service and marking ceremony is being planned by the Richard Henry Lee Chapter of the
Sons of the American Revolution.
