What is SAR?
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) is a patriotic, historical, and educational organization founded in 1889. It is composed of descendants of patriots who supported the cause of American Independence during the Revolutionary War. With over 37,000 members across the United States and several international societies, SAR is the largest male lineage society in America. Our members honor their Revolutionary ancestors by promoting patriotism, preserving history, and educating future generations about the founding principles of our nation.
SAR members are men (age 18 and older) who can prove direct lineal descent from a Revolutionary War patriot. This includes soldiers, sailors, signers of the Declaration of Independence, members of the Continental Congress, and those who provided material aid or other patriotic service. Membership is open to all eligible men regardless of race, religion, or national origin. The Richard Henry Lee Chapter, like other chapters in the Alabama Society SAR, actively participates in community service, color guard presentations, grave markings, youth education programs, and patriotic observances such as the 4th of July and Veterans Day.
Through programs like the Americanism Essay Contest, ROTC/JROTC awards, Eagle Scout recognition, and public education initiatives, the SAR works to keep alive the spirit of liberty and self-government that our patriot ancestors fought to establish. By joining the Richard Henry Lee Chapter, you become part of a proud tradition of honoring the past while serving your community and country today.
